Abstract: The uplands east of Carlsbad contain mixed sand dunes, mesic swales, gravel limestone hills, and mesquite flats. Mesquite occurs throughout these habitats, but pure stands of shin oak and sand sage occur on the deepest dunes, thick mesa- and sand-dropseed grasslands occupy flats, and the floristically-diverse hills can contain almost any Chihuahan desert shrub.
